Total Acre Member Alex Harrell Breaks Soybean World Record With 218-Bushel Yield

Total Acre's data-driven approach helps farmers forecast crop performance based on historical data and current trends.

LEXINGTON, KY / ACCESSWIRE / August 21, 2024 / Alex Harrell, a soybean producer from southwest Georgia, has shattered the world record for soybean yield with a remarkable 218 bushels per acre. Harrell's achievement, recorded on August 13, 2024, breaks his previous record of 206 bushels, set just one year ago.

Alex Harrell
Total Acre Member and record breaking soybean farmer

Harrell, a second-year member of Total Acre, has quickly risen to the top of the soybean production charts. Harrell achieved this unprecedented yield planting Pioneer P49Z02E variety in 30" red clay soil rows with a 110,000-planting population and using advanced techniques like double strip tilling, center pivot irrigation, precise nutrient management, and tissue sampling.

Harrell attributes much of his success to the tools and methodologies he has picked up from Total Acre, a membership platform that focuses on unlocking production potential and maximizing efficiency on every acre. Total Acre's tools integrate advanced software, technology, and data analytics to benchmark performance and optimize agricultural practices over time, taking the emotion out of the decision-making process for growers.

One of the key components of the current record holder's success was his meticulous approach to nutrient management, analyzing up to 14 different micro and macronutrients throughout the season, Harrell was able to optimize his crop's growing conditions at every stage in production. By regularly conducting tissue sampling-sometimes weekly-Harrell could identify and address nutrient deficiencies in real-time, ensuring that his plants were always in the best possible condition.

"Total Acre is about getting better every day," says Chad Scebold, Head of Grower Experience at Total Acre. "Our members are willing to try new farming methods and products to find the best balance for their fields, while also optimizing their return on investment. We teach them to leverage what they do well, create a plan, execute on the plan, measure the results, and then make the necessary adjustments to maximize production potential on their land." Total Acre's data-driven approach is further enhanced by predictive analytics, which helps farmers forecast crop performance based on historical data and current trends.

Harrell's achievement underscores the vast potential of crop production practices. "We used to think 150 bushels was the ceiling, but he has proven that the potential is much greater," says Scebold. Just two years ago, Total Acre Co-Founder Randy Dowdy broke the world record for soybean yield with 190.23 bushels per acre, surpassing his previous record of 171 bushels in 2016. "With new technologies and historical field data available to our members, the skies the limit for unlocking production potential for soybeans and corn."

Total Acre members like Harrell gain the unique advantage of integrating benchmarking into their operation, empowering them to refine methods to reach their yield goals.

Total Acre Introduces Nutrient Power Ranking (NPR) for Farmers

New proprietary tool addresses nutrients out of balance that will have the greatest impact on overall yields

(Lexington, Kentucky): Total Acre is excited to announce the new tissue sampling scoring method Nutrient Power Ranking (NPR), Version One is now available to help farmers understand and predict how different nutrients affect their crops. This tool is a new feature within the proprietary Yield Management System (YMS) that Total Acre members currently have access to.

NPR is a tool created by crop modeling plus analytics to gain a greater awareness and understanding of what nutrients are sufficient individually. This advanced tissue scoring method highlights imbalances—whether too high or too low, identifying the optimal time and stage to apply specific nutrients, helping farmers optimize yield and maximize ROI. Attention to detail and accuracy is everything, according to David Hula, “You just can’t manage what you can’t measure.”

According to Randy Siever, Chief Operating Officer, “The NPR tool is a unique product that is a culmination of digesting nearly a decade of real on-farm data points, specifically designed to benchmark nutrient sufficiency analytics with our interactive nutrient matrix. This accurately pin-points issues that can be managed within the entire growing system.” Total Acre’s goal with NPR is to answer the question for farmers, “If I were to apply a single nutrient at this point, which would have the greatest impact on my yield?”

If the scoring method identifies an issue the farmer can reference a list of preferred or known products to fix that deficiency to regain balance. To continue to measure against the benchmark goal, tissue samples will be re-pulled to see if the application remedied the issue. The objective is to treat the actual problem, not just the symptoms.

In 2024, NPR is currently available only for corn with testing ongoing for soybean production. NPR results are published for corn at two key times during the year when nutrient balance has the most impact: once when crops have grown 700-850 GDUs and again at the VT/R1stage. Regular messages about new tissue samples will now include a note about having an NPR analysis available. Farmers need to enter their RM (Relative Maturity) on the tissue sample sites to get the correct sample highlighted.

Addressing nutrients out of balance will have the greatest impact on your overall yield. David Hula, nine-time World Champion Corn Grower and Total Acre founder advises, “We still encourage you to address any sufficiency gaps first from the traditional scale. If you're in the green for sufficiency, use the NPR scale to fix any red (in-sufficient) balances.” Hula reminds farmers that having a realistic goal for a particular field and knowing when to push for higher yields or pump the brakes to avoid spending money chasing an unattainable yield should be top of mind.

Currently, only growers with Total Acre memberships can use the new NPR tool. For more information about the Nutrient Power Ranking visit: https://totalacre.com/interest-list

Total Acre® Grower Sets New Soybean Yield World Record

Smithville, Georgia (August 24, 2023) – In a classic case of the student surpassing the teacher, Total Acre grower Alex Harrell of Smithville, GA has bested the current soybean yield record holder, Randy Dowdy. Harrell has established a new world soybean yield record at an astonishing 206.7997 bu/ac.

With a goal of raising 200 bu/ac, Harrell was looking to push his field’s potential. And with the help of his crop consultant, Caleb Traugh, he did that and more. They formulated the perfect plan and executed it to perfection, making only a few alterations when tissue samples revealed specific nutrient demands.

Harrell called it a testament to the Total Acre grower camps led by Randy Dowdy and David Hula and their pay-it-forward approach to crop production strategies.

“Randy Dowdy truly set the bar and gave me something to chase,” said Harrell. “He made me realize that it was possible to achieve record yields here in Georgia.”

Harrell and his father strive to make the most of their acres using learnings from Total Acre camps. To pair population and variety, they planted AG 48X9 coated in their standard practice seed treatment with the addition of BRANDT Seed Zone® Zn. They planted on 30” row width. Despite their prayers for good weather, the Harrell farm received a packing rain shortly after planting, resulting in a final stand of 77,000. Mother Nature threw another setback at the crop with a 10-day flooding rain in early June. From there, the crop saw ideal weather the rest of the way.

As the season progressed, Harrell realized the potential of his crop. Initially predicting at least 150 bu/ac soybeans, the Georgia farmer began to understand the crop’s potential after he desiccated it and saw pod load and bean size. Still uncertain he would best Dowdy’s yield record of 191 bu/ac, Harrell knew he had something special. After celebrating his record with his father, Harrell said he wanted his first phone call to be to Randy Dowdy to share the news personally.

"Randy Dowdy and I would like to congratulate Alex on breaking the milestone of 200 bu/ac for soybeans,” said David Hula. “Alex represents a portion of the Total Acre members who are not only focused on ROI but are also driven to push yields to the limit."
